About the Author

Dr Tom Rayner is a Research Fellow at the University of New South Wales. His research focuses on the responses of freshwater fish to environmental flows in arid-zone wetlands. This includes the investigation of hydrological connectivity and fish movements. He has a background in small tropical rivers, flood pulse dynamics, feeding ecology and pest management.

Backpack Electrofishing workshop with Jim Reynolds, Seattle, September 16-18

The Northwest Environmental Training Center will be hosting a 3-day Backpack Electrofishing workshop at our South Seattle headquarters from September 16th-18th inclusive.  The workshop will be taught by Dr. Jim Reynolds, professor emeritus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and is intended to meet the NMFS training requirements for field staff.  The workshop includes a full-day field trip with demonstration and hands-on application sessions, and classroom coverage of the following topics:

- Fish Sampling and Electrofishing Applications
- Electric Circuits and Electric Fields
- Backpack Electrofishing Systems
- Fish Health and Safety
- Fish Capture and Handling Techniques
- Sampling Design, Techniques, and Standardization
- Crew Health and Safety
- Permit Requirements and Agency Conditions
- Equipment Advice and Checklists
